/>

Editing is a key part of the entire writing process, but it is a separate component that should always be done. Without editing your work, there may be a good chance that you have made some small mistakes that may turn into big ones. Your goal should be to communicate your message clearly and to avoid any miscommunication.

Publishing work on your website riddled with grammatical and spelling errors sends out a message, and it has to do with credibility. Visitors, especially potential clients or customers, will find it difficult to trust you because of small errors in your content. It is important to take the time to edit and proofread your content to exude a professional image at all times.

Handing in an essay, paper, or thesis with mistakes could also have the same affect. Of course, your goal is to get a good mark and to impress your professor or teacher, but you also want to communicate that you can write and write well. Editing is a part of that.

Editing is about professionalism and care. It shows that you are a professional, and this applies to business owners, employers, employees, individuals, and students. It also communicates that you care about your work and what you have to say. Editing means that you value each and every word that you write and put out there.

Some people may say that it is important to be able to not only write, but also edit your own work. But I think if more people edit and proofread your work, more mistakes will be caught. A second pair of eyes will be in a better position to spot any mistakes you may have missed. Also, it is a good idea to seek a professional editor who can catch grammatical errors and rewrite sentences to improve flow and overall consistency.

Who edits your work?

Happy editing!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

Top 5 Reasons to Use Social Media for Your Business

Social media is one of the most cost-effective ways to market your business and personal brand. Some people are hesitant to use social media, such as Facebook and Twitter for their business because they don't think it will be beneficial. But social media is beneficial because it can help your business grow by increasing your customer base and getting your name 'out there'. There are many reasons why you should start using web 2.0 for your business.

1. More People Will Know Who You Are

Social media is the greatest form of free, effective advertising. If you have a blog, or a Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter account, there are more chances that your business name will be seen, heard, and acknowledged. How? Having social media accounts increases your search engine rankings; thereby, driving more traffic to your website and social media accounts. Remember to use SEO keywords! The more times someone hears or sees your business name or brand, the more likely they are to trust you and become your new customers.

2. Your Potential Customers and Competitors Are Using Social Media

Just about everyone uses social media. On average, there are over four million Facebook users today. Facebook, Twitter, and blogs allow you to reach out and connect with potential customers that you wouldn't have a chance to meet otherwise. With social media, it is easier to maintain your existing relationships with your customers, and more importantly, connect with new ones. Plus, if your competitors are using social media to generate business, you should too.

3. You Can Build Your Reputation

Facebook and other social media applications are an easy, effective way to communicate with your customers about any new changes in your business, promotions, products, jobs, and events. You can instantly respond to questions, concerns, and comments, and keep conversations going. This will show that you care about what people think about your business and that you care about your customers.

4. You Can Be a Subject Matter Expert

In addition to connecting with more customers and getting new business using social media, it is also important to advertise yourself as an expert in your particular field. For example, if your business specializes in graphic or web design, post links to articles about new trends in design or blog about techniques to create an eye-catching logo. Show that you know more about your field than your competitors. Your business will appear more credible and people will trust that you'll do a good job.

5. Social Media is Cost and Time Effective

Creating a Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and blog account is absolutely free, and setting them up takes just a few minutes. With technology today, such as iPhones, SmartPhones, and Blackberry Playbooks, you can easily update your social media accounts and your customers can stay connected no matter where they are or where they are going.

Delving into the world of social media may seem a bit daunting at first, but with a little practice and research you'll be well on your way to making your business a success! Try it today.

Good luck!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

How to Overcome Writer's Block

If you're a writer you have most likely experienced writer's block. I certainly have. There are some projects that I can complete in no time where the words freely flow through my fingers and onto my computer screen. But there are those times (you know the ones I mean) when you are just stuck. No ideas, thoughts, or words surface. This blog is dedicated to help you overcome writer's block.

1. Take a Break

You'll be surprised by what a short break can do. I don't mean getting up for a glass of water and coming back to your computer. Take a real break that lasts at least 15 or 20 minutes. Going for a walk, making a meal, or taking a power nap are great ways to relax mentally and physically.

2. Seek Inspiration

Sometimes all you need is that one idea to get those creative juices flowing. Talk to your friends, search the Internet, read more books, such as The Writer's Block 786 Ideas to Jump-Start Your Imagination. Better yet, take a vacation or visit your favourite place in your local town or city. I usually find that a change of scenery is all you need to inspire you to write something brilliant.

3. Get Advice

Speak to other writers or reach out to your creative community. If you make the right connections, you can gain more support and share ideas on how to be productive and reach your writing goals. You can bounce ideas off of one another and create new ones too. It's always a good idea to being your work and allow others to offer feedback if you're comfortable enough.

4. Make a Plan

Reach for a pen and a notebook, and outline exactly what you want your project, novel, or poem to communicate. Ensure that you develop a beginning, middle, and end. The best part about an outline is that you can always come back to it and add more ideas no matter what writing stage you're in.

5. Take Public Transportation

I know, this is an odd one. But from my personal experience listening to other people's conversations or simply being aware of who is on the bus or train seems to spark an idea or thought for a project or poem. The way a person is dressed or speaks is all it takes. You'll be surprised by how it can change your way of thinking. So go ahead, leave your car in the garage and hop on the bus. You'll thank me. Remember to carry a notebook with you to write your ideas down.

Happy writing!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

Networking: My Trials and Tribulations

This post is quite different from what I normally write about. This post expresses my own personal view on networking and "putting yourself out there," as they say. As a new business owner, I find myself in the position to mingle amongst other business types and successful entrepreneurs to meet potential clients who may require my services.

Not too long ago, I attended a business mixer in the Edmonton area. It's always awkward, for me, to just dive into a crowd and introduce myself as a professional writer who has skills. It's downright scary, but exhilarating and freeing at the same time.

At this particular event, we were left on our own devices. There were no public introductions, so you had to work at getting a chance to speak to the right people. How? To be honest, I just interrupt people. I know this may sound rude, but how else should you do it? If you want to meet the most people in the least amount of time, this is a great way to do it. Pardon my manners.

The formality is usually the same. Ensure that you take your business cards with all of your updated contact details. I state what I do: "I am a freelance writer who specializes in writing and editing." I exchange business cards and try to find out if they need my services. If they hint that they may, I write a note on their business card so I can refer back to it later and follow-up. Following-up is key.

I ended up speaking to the right people and learnt some great things. I learned that you should not give up on trying to pursue a client until you have made the seventh call. Seven calls! Most people give up after the first or second try. Plus, there's even someone you can contact to do it all for you! She's called the phone lady.

On the topic of social media, I also learned that in order to have a successful blog, you need to offer informative tips and advice in addition to something on a more personal level. Hence this post. Facebook is great for providing your clients with event details or special offers, while LinkedIn is more useful if you're looking for employment. Twitter is good for connecting with people from all over the world.

Most importantly, I met a potential client and organized a meeting. Networking is a great tool for new and old business owners. It gives you the opportunity to connect with people who all have the same goal. It's called success. Even if you're not entirely comfortable with the idea of networking, like I was, give it a try. It works. If I can do it, you surely can too.

Good luck!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Writer

Writing Effective Sales Letters

Sales letters are one of the most effective marketing tools for small and large businesses. If you are a new business owner and want to get your name out there, sending sales letters is a powerful, low-cost way to reach potential clients. Here are some key components that you should keep in mind when writing your sales letter:

Be Professional

Show potential clients that you are a real business that is professional and credible. Your sales letters should always include the following elements:

Letterhead with your company contact details (name, address, phone and fax number, email and website address)

Company, contact name and address of the business you are sending your letter to

Salutation

Sign off and signature (e.g. Yours sincerely, Adam Jones)

Begin With a Hook

Start your sales letter off with an attention-grabbing headline, question or statement. It should be short (one to five lines), and relevant to your business.

Be Personal

Use the words 'you' and 'your' at every opportunity in your sales letter. This creates a conversational tone, and readers feel like you are speaking directly to them. Readers are more likely to really listen to your words and to be genuinely interested in what you have to say.

Highlight Your Services

What does your company provide? What do you specialize in? What are you selling? Ensure that you clearly explain and describe your services or products.

List Key Benefits

Now that your potential clients know what your company offers, you should answer these questions next: Why do they need your services or products? How can you make their life easier? Provide your potential clients with the benefits of your service or product. If you are a printing company, one of your benefits could be that you offer a free, low-cost delivery service that saves time and money.

Include a Call-to-Action

You should always, always close your sales letter with a call-to-action. Even if the same contact information is listed in your letterhead, you should repeat it in your letter. It urges your clients to contact you right away.

Send It

Once your sales letter is written, send it out to your potential clients via mail, fax or email. Remember to keep track of who you send your sales letter to, so you can follow up with a phone call.

Have fun selling your business!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

How to Write for the Radio

Writing for the radio can be challenging if you've never done it before. For the creative writer, it is fun, rewarding, and it can be quite lucrative.

Steps to Follow

1. Establish Time: Usually, radio scripts are 30 or 60 seconds long. A good way to determine how long your script needs to be is to time yourself as you read the script aloud. Keep your sentences punchy, clear and concise.

2. Engage Listeners: The opening line should address a problem that listeners want to solve. For example, if the ad is about a cost-effective product or service for travellers, then the opening could be: "Never thought you could travel without spending money?" Asking a question is a great opener.

3. Spell Out Benefits: Outline the benefits of the product or service. How does it work? What's in it for the listeners? How is the problem solved? In the above example, you can highlight the benefits of an all-inclusive package for an exotic location (cost-effective product).

4. Seal the Deal: Always include the call to action to get listeners to respond and act immediately. The call to action is usually a website address or phone number.

5. Include a Brand: Finish your radio script with a brand, such as a tagline or slogan that is unique to the company, service or product. In most cases, the tagline is already established by the company.

Things to consider:

Contact radio stations or companies who need scripts written

Write radio scripts on spec to build a portfolio

Keep your scripts simple and relevant

Listen to radio ads and commercials regularly

Follow the appropriate radio script/ad format

Good luck!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

Going Creative

Are you one of those writers who doesn't write as much as they should? But no matter what you choose to call it, networking is all about meeting fellow business owners or business people and selling yourself. Let's take a look at how you can have fun networking in a creative way, while getting those sought-after contacts.

10 Tips to Enjoy Networking

1. Use Humour: This can only be beneficial if you use it effectively. For example, tell a humorous story and link it to your business or services, and then explain how you can help their business.

2. Stand Out: Dress professionally, but add something bright and quirky to your attire, such as a funky tie, socks or jacket. If you stand out from the group, you are more memorable and shows others that you not only have a talent, but also style.

3. Smile: Be genuine in your efforts to build real relationships and connections with people. Try not to only focus on landing that freelance job. In the networking world, what counts is who knows you.

4. Bring Business Cards: Ensure that everyone receives information on how to contact you after the networking event. Hand them out and ask for business cards as well. If you don't have any, buy blank cards and place stamps or labels with your business details on them. Get creative!

5. Join Professional Organizations: Sign up to attend events or volunteer at associations that relate to your business. It's a great way to meet new people and to connect with potential clients.

6. Sell Yourself: Make your first impression count and polish your elevator pitch. Practice by role playing with your family and friends.

7. Research: Browse the internet and search for networking events in your area. Try to go to a different event each time; that way, you can meet different people.

8. Stay Organized: Create a business folder or a table in Excel with the contact details of the people you meet and a memorable detail about them.

9. Stay in Touch: Follow-up each meeting and encounter with a quick phone call telling them it was great to meet them and referring them to your services again. Set up a face-to-face meeting if you have the time.

10. Be Professional: Some evening events offer alcoholic beverages, so it may be tempting to have a few drinks to calm your nerves. It's best to stay sober and focus on making real business connections.

Great networking websites to visit:

Networking Etiquette

How to Network: 12 Tips for Shy People

How to Make the Most of Meetings and Events

Have fun networking!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ignitecreativewriting.blogspot.com/2010/08/networkingits-fun-no-really.html' title='Networking...it's fun. Most of you are on Facebook or have your own blog, but do you have a Twitter account? If not, I suggest you do. I'm taking my own advice and setting up one today.

But is it worth your time? How can Twitter help your business? Establish contacts? New clients? I'm dedicating this blog post to finding the answers to these vital questions.

Before we can into the nitty gritty, it may help to know exactly how to set up a Twitter account first.

Why Twitter is Good For Your Business:

1. Easy to Use: Unlike a blog, your thoughts (tweets) are limited to 140 words or less. Your tweet can simply be a recommendation for a movie, website, or a company. If you own a business, you can advertise any special discounts, and who knows, you could have a clan of people following you. This means new contacts!

2. Cost Effective: As I said, your tweets can be short and sweet, so you are spending less time writing and researching like you would for a blog. In a matter of a few minutes, you could be generating new business and getting new clients.

3. Great Knowledge Base: On Twitter, you can follow other experts in your business field and gain additional knowledge to help improve your business practices. Sharing knowledge and advice with business people alike is definitely worth your while.

4. New Clients: You can do this so easily on Twitter by answering questions related to your business, following companies that could use your service, replying to job postings, and advertising events. Can you think of any more ways?

5. Frequent Communication: With Twitter, you can keep in contact with your clients, send out reminders for meetings or events, ask for referrals, and get feedback on your services.

These are just a few ways that Twitter can help rocket your business into success; there are more useful strategies. Twitter is and can be a great, effective marketing tool for your business. It's certainly worth a try even if you still believe it may not be beneficial. But what have you got to lose?

Happy tweeeeeeting!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

Starting Your Own Freelance Writing Business

Are you a self-disciplined, ambitious writer who thrives on working to your own beat and drum? If the answer is yes, then a freelance career may be the perfect fit for you. Listed below are the steps that you need to take when you first start your own freelance writing business.

How to Kick-Start Your Business:

Step 1: Choose a Form of Business

What type of business do you want to start? Your business can be a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation or a cooperative. Establishing your business as a sole proprietorship is the easiest way to set up a business, but there are pros and cons for each type. Choose the one that best suits your business needs.

Step 2: Register Your Business Name

All businesses must register a business name, unless your business is a sole proprietorship that operates under your own personal name. Choose a unique name that best describes your business and services. It's always a good idea to perform an online search before you register your name. You can register at any registry office (same place where you get your driver's license) and they normally charge a fee starting at $40.

Step 3: Apply For a Business License

Contact your nearest business licensing and development department and fill out an application form - this can usually be completed online. If you live in Edmonton, contact The City of Edmonton and speak to a representative for more information. You will need to pay two fees depending on the nature of your business and you will also be required to renew your business license annually.

Step 4: Register For GST (Goods and Services Tax)

Most businesses in Canada must register and collect GST, but only if your business makes $30,000 or more per year. If your business makes less than $30,000, you don't need to register for GST, instead you can voluntarily register for GST. For more information, contact Canada Revenue Agency.

Other considerations:

Research the employment standards for employees if and when you are in the position to hire staff

Open a separate business account at your local bank

Apply for a PayPal account - it's an easy way for your clients to pay for your services

Keep all your business receipts (for business purchases), bank statements and invoices for tax purposes

Hire a professional and credible bookkeeper

I wish your business good luck!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

Writing the Perfect Query Letter

Understanding and knowing how to write effective query letters is essential if you want to become a published, successful writer. It is well worth your time, and it could mean your byline appearing in a well-known magazine. So let's take a look at the main components of a great query letter.

The 5 Must-Have's

1. Opener/Teaser (first paragraph)

This is the most important element of query letters where you need to sell your idea for your article in 25 to 50 words or less. It should entice, intrigue and excite the reader to continue reading your letter. Here's an example:

Mary Parker peers down at the steady hand holding hers and wonders why she is still alive, yet again.

Do you want to know more...? If so, this example is a great teaser!

2. Background (second paragraph)

This is the part where you explain, in detail, the subject of your article. Expand your opener and tell the reader more about your proposed story, piece or article.

3. Story Plan (third paragraph)

Discuss the title of the article, the word length, and what your article will be about. What will you talk about? Will there be a sidebar? Give the reader a clear idea of what form and shape your article will take.

4. Personal Background (fourth paragraph)

Sell yourself as a freelance writer. Include any writing credits, educational qualifications, and the reasons why you should write your proposed piece. Why are you the best person to write this article?

5. Closing (final paragraph)

Thank the reader for their consideration, say that you have enclosed a self-addressed stamped envelope and tell them you look forward to hearing from them soon. Sign your letter and include all your contact details (address, phone, email, website).

Query letters should be...

One page in length

Single-spaced

Written in 10 to 12 point in standard fonts (Times New Roman, Arial or Courier)

Free of spelling and grammatical errors

Printed and formatted correctly on 8.5-by-11 inch white paper

Written to the editor using the correct name and job title

Happy query letter writing and good luck!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

Ghost Writing

What is ghost writing? What does it mean? As a writer, you may already know. You could say that there are pros and cons to being a ghost writer. Some say that it can be quite lucrative, while others may say that it goes hand in hand with selling your soul to the devil. Let's explore ghost writing a bit further...

What is a Ghost Writer?

A professional writer who gets paid to write articles, stories, or novels for a client who takes the credit. Simply put, you do the work without a byline.

Why Become a Ghost Writer?

You can quit your day job and make a decent living being a ghost writer. For example, if you're hired as a ghost writer to write a novel you could get paid between $20,000 to $55,000 for the project. You also get a chance to write about topics you've always wanted to write and learn about.

How Do You Become a Ghost Writer?

1. Choose a Topic: What are you interested in writing about? Articles? Books? Sales letters? Whatever it may be, market your services to the right target audience. Or you can choose to write for a variety of communication mediums.

2. Advertise: One of the best ways to get your name out there is to create a website and market your services as a ghost writer. Joining writing forums and handing out your business cards to potential clients are also great ways to advertise.

3. Search for Contracts: The first place to start looking for ghost writing contracts is online. You can bid on projects on Guru and Elance by sending potential clients a proposal outlining why you would be the right person to complete the project.

If you're not comfortable with writing your words for someone else and relinquishing all credit, then ghost writing may not be the right career for you. But if ghost writing interests you, get started today. In a nutshell, ghost writing only has one single drawback and many rewarding benefits.

Happy ghost writing!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

How to Advertise Your Blog

In my last blog, I discussed how to set up your own blog and get started. Having a blog could even land your dream job. But where do you begin? I'll show you...

How to Start a Blog

1. Choose a Topic: What do you want your blog to be about? The best way to find the answer to this question is to decide what you're most knowledgeable about. Do you know a lot about sports, music, or films? Or do you want to set up a personal blog about your feelings and thoughts?

2. Name Your Blog: Choose a blog name that tells readers what your blog is about and one that reflects the content of your blog. If your blog is about foreign films, 'Films From the World' or something similar would be ideal.

3. Choose a Blogging Provider: Search the Internet for providers such as, Blogger, WordPress, or TypePad. Most are free and easy to use.

4. Customize Your Blog: Choose a template, colours, layouts, and buttons to personalize your blog. Also, decide whether you want your blog to be private or public.

5. Start Blogging: Write informative posts about your chosen subject, and remember to include links to other websites, pictures, and tags or labels.

Blogging Tips

Remember to search the Internet to ensure your chosen blog name isn't already taken

Publish your blog on your Facebook, LinkedIn or website page

Update your blog at least once a week or daily

Visit other blogs and post comments, along with your blog URL

Tell prospective employers or clients that you have a blog and provide your blog URL

Happy blogging!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

Publishing Your Novel

My last post focused on the process of starting to write a novel and I touched on the subject of getting your work published. This post is dedicated to providing you witty writers with valuable information on how to publish your brilliant novel.

How to Get Published

1. Perfect Your Novel: Ensure that your novel is as good as you can get it. How? It takes a fair amount of rewriting to get your novel at the stage where it's ready to be published. Rewriting is where the true writing process begins.

2. Be Prepared: Make copies of your manuscript, both print and electronically just in case anything happens to the backup copy on your computer. Also, ensure that your novel is properly formatted, omitting any fancy layouts or paper. Keep it simple and professional.

3. Do Research: Decide which publisher would be the best choice for publishing your work. To do this you should familiarize yourself with the types of books that publishers publish. Visit your local bookstore and write down the addresses of publishers that specialize in publishing novels like yours.

4. Write a Cover Letter: Your manuscript should be accompanied by a well-written cover letter. Make it exciting, effective, and clear.

5. Send Your Novel: Once you've followed all of the above 4 steps, email or post your manuscript to your chosen publisher(s) and wait for a response.

Things to Consider...

Be patient: Sometimes it can take up to 6 months before you hear back from a publisher

Start writing your second novel while you wait

Welcome constructive criticism: If your novel is rejected, take the advice given and apply it when you rewrite

Do your homework: know your stuff about publicists, promotions, and book deals

I wish you much success in the publishing world!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

Writing a Novel

Writing a novel is one of the greatest accomplishments for any aspiring and talented writer. Do you want to write one? I hope that some day I will write a novel and get it published ( I really mean that). But of course there is a formula , as with everything else, for writing a novel. Let's take a look at what's involved in this ever-challenging quest for putting words to paper.

How to Write a Novel

1. Choose your story: What do you want to say, express, tell? Make an outline, jot down ideas, or write a simple paragraph that focuses on what your novel is about (this is called the plot). Ask yourself: Would I read this novel or be interested in reading it? If the answer is no, tweaking your idea may be a good idea.

2. Create the heart of your novel: A good novel needs to have dynamic, interesting main characters.Write descriptive personality sketches about your:

Protagonist: Tell the reader who this character is by connecting him/her to your readers. This can be done through well-written scenes and events.

and...

Antagonist: Your antagonist needs to have bad and good traits so your readers can relate to them in some way.

Answer these questions about both of these characters (and your secondary characters):

Name?

Age?

Likes/dislikes?

Flaws?

Favourite pastimes? Food? Music? Films?

Morals/values?

Can you think of any more?

3. Start writing: It doesn't matter how you start your novel. What really matters is the actual writing process. You can start from the end (if you know what the ending is), write about the characters or setting, or you can simply dive into the story. Even if you do get writer's block, it's best to keep on writing even if it's just one sentence or word a day.

4. Keep writing: Make a writing schedule and try to stick to it. Each day, write a paragraph or a page or two. You can even try to write at least 500 words per day. If you miss a day of writing, it's okay, really.

5. Share your work: After you have completed your brilliant novel, show it to someone who can be objective and honest, and who is knowledgeable about the writing process.

6. Rewrite: Polish and perfect your words. Then do it again. Enlist the help of an editor, it could be a friend or family member. Just be careful not to over-edit your work.

7. Publish your novel: This is the most exciting stage! Send your work out to publishing companies or you can self-publish your work. Either way, aim to get your work published and on those book shelves.

Handy Tips:

Envision your story like a film in slow motion where you're the observer

Avoid cliches

Join online forums for writers to seek advice

Read novels to improve your writing technique

Never stop writing

Never give up

Have fun writing!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

How to Become an Advertising Copywriter

Are you a clever writer who has always dreamed of hearing your words on the radio or seeing them dance across your television screen? If your answer is, "Yes, I have," then there is no doubt that you would enjoy flourishing in a career as an advertising copywriter. Here's my two cents' worth on how to break into the advertising market...

Attention: Aspiring Advertising Copywriters

1. Learn how to sell: The easiest way to do this is to work in a sales position where you can learn how to make products appealing to the target market. Try direct marketing, customer service or retail jobs.

2. Take a course or two: Locate your nearest college or university and register in courses that focus on writing advertising copy. You can choose to take online courses too!

3. Start job hunting: Search job site engines that list creative jobs in advertising and marketing, and apply for them. Remember to tailor your cover letter to the key skills and qualifications that they are looking for. You can also look for companies who offer internships.

4. Create a solid portfolio: If you don't have any work samples that focus on your advertising copywriting skills, then volunteer your services at companies that you would love to work for. If this describes you, then becoming a fashion writer may be the career for you. But how do you break into this seemingly competitive market? I'll show you how...

5 Steps to Become a Fashion Writer

Step 1: Choose Your Medium

Decide whether you want to write articles for magazines or newspapers. If you want to become a freelance fashion writer, you can choose who you want to work for and set your own hours. There are some fashion writers who work for specific publications and others who write sales or PR materials related to the fashion industry.

Step 2: Study, Research and Learn

Get your hands on fashion magazines, articles and publications that you want to write for and start reading. Study the writing style and tone, pay attention to the subject, and look for creative/visual elements. Popular fashion magazines that you may want to consider are Allure, InStyle, and FASHION Magazine.

Step 3: Create a Fashion Portfolio

It's important to show potential clients or employers just how passionate you are about fashion and writing. Here are some tips on how to make you stand out from the crowd:

Re-vamp your resume: Make it look like a page spread in a high fashion magazine. Include a photo of yourself and use fashion terms/vocabulary in your text. Explain and show how you would excel as a fashion writer (as you would in a cover letter).

Include writing samples: Write at least 10 fashion articles on the latest trends, a new fashion designer or beauty/make-up tips. They don't have to be published pieces.

Enlist some help: Consider hiring a graphic artist to design your portfolio pieces. If your work looks professional, you'll get noticed.

Step 4: Sell Yourself

Start applying for fashion writing jobs and sending queries to magazines and newspapers. Try looking on these websites for fashion writing positions and internships:

Craigslist
Media Bistro
Daily Fashion Jobs

Step 5: Be Prepared

Ensure that you are knowledgeable about contracts, copyrights and submission guidelines. It's important to familiarize yourself with these concepts when writing for publications.

Happy fashion writing!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

How to be a Food Writer/Critic

For those of you who are interested in becoming a food writer or critic because of your love for food and writing, this post is for you. If you're passionate about food, it will come through in your words making your reviews something to rave about.

2. Educate yourself: Get your hands on every resource that will help you to learn more about food in general and the restaurant business. Here are some tips to get you started:

Subscribe to food magazines such as, Food and Wine, Saveur, or Canadian Living.

Register for cooking classes even if you already know how to cook. It won't hurt to learn new techniques and ways to create different flavours!

Read books about food and how to write about food. Try The Art of Eating and Best Food Writing. Write a list of authors who write about food topics, visit your local library and start reading.

Research your local newspapers and magazines to get a feel of their style and point of view.

3. Eat out: Visit new restaurants and take a few friends with you, that way everyone can order something different. When tasting each dish only take a few bites so your stomach has room to try everything. Keep it long enough to communicate the theme of the story and introduce essential characters. When I say theme, I mean the main message or idea underlying the story.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when developing the theme of your story:

1. What is my story about?
2. What do I want to communicate to my readers?
3. Why am I writing this story?

Once you have discovered the theme of your story, you should keep the following things in mind. The rest will be up to you.

Short Story Tips

1. Focus on your theme: Ensure that you always keep your theme in mind when writing

2. Keep it short: Write only what your story needs to get your message across to your readers

3. Choose your characters wisely: Only introduce essential characters that develop your story and theme. Also, decide on the narrative point of view.

4. Demand your readers' attention: Write captivating first lines of your first paragraph. Here are a couple of examples:

- Poised beneath the snow-frosted window, she knew she had to break through it.

- The hand that I am holding used to be my husband's; now, I don't recognize it at all.

5. Keep the setting and imagery in mind: Develop a world for your story and describe it well

A few resources that you may find informative...

Short Story Group

eHow

Short Stories

Happy short story writing!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

Creative Non-Fiction

Writing about your personal life experiences that are true and from the heart is a miraculous thing. Sharing these kinds of stories with the world is brave.

Non-fiction is one of my favourite types of genres simply because the story being told is true. It's real. It's raw. It's beautiful. If you're reading a non-fiction novel or story that is based on an experience that you have gone through, you can relate to it and be inspired to write your own story. Even if you haven't gone through the same life experiences as the author, you can still learn something significant - perhaps it can be life-altering.
Non-fiction takes on many forms:

1. Diaries/journals
2. Memoirs
3. Personal Essay
4. Although it sounds like a fairly simple thing to feel and to be, it can be challenging to achieve this particular state of mind.

Personally, I am most inspired when I feel happy and content with my life and everything that is going on around me (family, friends, relationships, career). There is also the flip side of the coin. I am also compelled to write when I feel sad or if something bad has happened in my life. Writing creatively acts as a portal in which I can freely channel my innermost emotions without fear or judgment. What are you feeling when you write?

According to the dictionary, inspiration is the stimulation of the mind or emotions creating a high level of feeling and activity. This explains my discovery and newfound belief that when you are inspired, you produce your best work. When you are inspired you feel good and radiate a positive energy and, in turn, it is translated into the most highest and purest form of art and creation. This is what you want to achieve when your are writing creatively. So how do you become inspired?

The Road to Inspiration

- Read a good book (choose one that tells a great story and changes the way you think, non-fiction books are always a good read)

- Watch mind-altering films (stick to ones with a fascinating, original story line, such as foreign films)

- Travel to exotic places (if you can spare the time and money, visit places like India, Italy or Brazil to get your creative juices flowing)

- Be adventurous (go sky diving, mountain climbing or paragliding)

- Meet interesting people (join networks and groups that share similar interest as you, put yourself out there)

- Listen to new music (buy or download music that you wouldn't normally listen to)

- Visit your local art gallery or museum (walk around, take it all in)

- Enroll yourself in a course (learn a new language or learn new cooking skills)

- Day dream (take a moment in your day to just dream, you never know where your mind might take you)

- Take a long walk (you may stumble upon something intriguing)

Try two or more of these suggestions, be inspired, and write something truly amazing.

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

Poetry Readings

Attending poetry readings are a great way to give your words a true voice and share your work with other poets and writers. There are usually held on a small stage in a cafe or bookstore.

Standing in front of a crowd reading your innermost emotions in the form of a poem can be intimidating, but it is liberating, and the best part is, it's fun! It also provides you with an opportunity to network with other writers, and perhaps a chance to get your poems published.

If you're particularly nervous or shy about reading your poetry aloud or if you simply want to polish your poetry reading skills, keep these suggestions in mind:

1. Choose poems that you are most comfortable with sharing and ones that are your absolute favourite

2. Read your poems aloud to yourself or with family or friends - do this a few times

3. Practice sitting or standing while reading your poems - what feels most comfortable? When you are participating in a poetry reading ensure that you ask for a chair or stool before you begin if you choose to sit

4. Relax - speak slowly and remember to breathe

5. Make eye contact with your audience - it's best to do this during the line breaks in your poem

6. Listen to yourself speak - concentrating on your words will take your mind off your audience

7. Enjoy the experience - remember to smile and connect with other poets after the reading

Edmonton has a number of venues available for poetry readings. Here are a few websites that are worth a visit:

The Olive Reading Series

Raving Poets

Stroll of Poets Society

Gather your courage and collect your poems to share with the world. At least it is for me. It may be helpful to learn more about the history of the haiku before you begin writing.

A haiku is a small, concise poem consisting of 5 -7-5 syllables. It aims to evoke intense emotions, capture moments of perception and describe captivating images all in a few lines. The haiku is one of my most favourite types of poems because I find intense, short poems to be the most moving, exciting and beautiful. Before writing a haiku, it helps to sit down with a cup of tea and read a few haikus...

Working Saturday Night

These stamps are virgins -
not even licked yet. Knight

How to Write a Haiku

Now it's time to write your very own haiku. Here's a few tips to get you started:

1. Understand the form - 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second line and 5 syllables in the third line.

2. Choose a good topic - Decide what you want to write and why. Do you want to express a specific feeling? (love, happiness, sadness, loneliness) Describe a season? (summer, spring, autumn, winter). Select a topic that will evoke an emotion and resonate with you and your readers.

3. Use a contrast or comparison - Create a 2-part structure within your haiku. For example, focus on a idea for the first 2 lines and then switch to a different idea in the last line (contrast). Or use the same idea in the first line and the last two (comparison).Your goal is to create a 'shift' that is neither too obvious or unclear.

4. Focus on the 5 senses - Write about what you see through concrete images that ignite a feeling.

5. Practice makes perfect - Write one haiku each day for a week and don't forget to read too!

Have fun writing!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter

How To Write A Poem

There are so many effective and fun techniques to write a poem. Writing a poem is one of the most beautiful ways in which you can channel your emotions, express a significant feeling, describe a poignant memory, or to simply be playful with words.

10 ways to ignite your inner poet

So with a pen and paper in hand, try these techniques to get you started:

1. Write a list of words that you think are funny, beautiful and ugly (hint: feel free to use a dictionary)

2. Find your favourite quote by a famous poet or author and interpret it

3. Listen and record other people's conversations (riding the bus is the perfect way to do this)

4. Make a collage of your favourite food

5. Start your poem with: "The sun glistens on snow like diamonds..."

6. Choose your favourite poem and re-write it in your own unique style and voice

7. Listen to music

8. Look through old pictures and write about the moment

9. Finish the phrase: "I am..." and repeat 10 - 15 times

10. Choose one letter of the alphabet and write a poem with words beginning with this letter

These are just a snippet of the most simple and fun ways to start writing a poem when you're first starting out. I've used these very techniques myself, and if they've worked for me, they certainly will work for you. Below is a poem that I've written using technique number 9:

The Metaphor in Search of Beauty

I am a sliver of chocolate cake
sinful on white porcelain china.
I'm the punctuated, piercing
scream of a six a.m. alarm...
assaulting your distorted
dreams.
I am fuchsia,
startling and brilliant.
I'm a delicate yellow page of a cherished over-read book
kept in the drawer of a rich oak bedside table,
beautifully scratched.
I am the crimson lipstick
on your husband's starched white collar.
I'm the long, fine-printed rock-steady warning
before you watch a film.
I am the perfectly shaped number eight
engraved on a sheet of ice by figure skates.
I'm drops of rain on evergreen leaves
springing from wrinkled trees around
seven in the crisp morning,
dense but delicate.
I am the held breath as you watch your lover sleep
beside you.
I'm a sticky, small rock from a black sand beach between
manicured toes.
I am each word.
I am the time it took to write this poem.

I find that when writing poems, it is best to do so with a pen and paper. Others may find it easier to begin writing on their laptops or computer, but the more traditional way works well for me. You may also want to visit your local bookstore or library and read books that are solely comprised of poems written by a range of different authors. And, of course, going online is the easiest way to access an abundance of poems. The more you read, the better your writing will become.

Choose the perfect time and find a quiet place to ignite the poet in you. I know you can do it. Enjoy and have fun!

Teresa Simmons
Freelance Copywriter
